Solution : Given surd 16 + 2 √55
It is in the form of a + √b , where a = 16 , b = 220 .
We find positive real numbers x and y such that
x + y = 16 ----------(1)
and 4xy = 220
We have (x - y)2 = (x + y)2 - 4 xy
= (16)2 - 220
= 256 - 220 = 36
We can take x - y = 6 ---------(2)
Add eq (1) and eq (2) . then x = 11 and y = 5 .
Answer : √11 + √5
