Line Segments of a Circle

In this article we see some line segment of a circle. In circle several lines are to be drawn, the line segments have specific names. Let us see the types of lines segments of a circle in the below steps. In circle five types of line segments are present there names are chord, diameter, radius, secant line, tangent line.

Now we see some lines segments in circles:

Explanation of line segment of a circle:


Chord:
A chord is a line segment whose endpoints both lie on the circle. The red line in the figure above is called a "chord of the circle" it is mentioned as CD. A chord is a line segment that only covers some part inside the circle. A chord that passing through the center of the circle is a diameter of the circle it is line segment with two ends on the circle. It is the longest possible chord of any circle.

Diameter:
   The diameter of a circle is the length of the line through the center and touching two points on its edge. The yellow line segment in the figure above is called a "longest chord of the circle c" it is mentioned as GH.

Radius:
The radius of a circle is the length, from the center to any point on circle edge. The radius is a line segment that always constant at any point on the circle. The blue line segment in the figure above is called a "chord of the circle c" it is mentioned as IJ.

A radius of a circle is any line segment from its center to its perimeter. By extension, the radius of a circle is the length of any such line segment, which is half the diameter.

Secant line:
A secant line segment is the line extension of a chord. Secant line segment of a circle stretching to infinity in both sides. If the line were closer to the center of the circle, it would cut the circle in two places and would then be called a secant

The green line in the figure above is called the "secant to the circle" it is mentioned as EF.
As you move one of the points, the secant line segment of a circle will change accordingly.
If the two points coincide at the one point, the secant becomes a tangent.

Tangent line:
The pink line in the figure above is called the "tangent to the circle c" it is mentioned as KL.
The line barely touches the circle at one point. As the secant line moves away from the center of the circle, the two points where it cuts the circle eventually merge into one and the line segment is tangent line to the circle.

While the tangent line segment to a circle at any point is perpendicular to the radius to that point.
