Decimal is a word used to describe the base 10 number system. We can express decimal as a fraction and fraction as a decimal. A decimal consists of a whole number part and a decimal part. The term right to the decimal point is decimal part and left tot the decimal pint is known as whole part. If a decimal number does not have whole number part we can put zero to the whole number part. Example: 19 .77, 0.63etc.
Methods of solving decimals:
Methods of solving decimals addition:
Step 1: Check whether the decimal numbers which are to be added have the same number of digits in the decimal part. If not make them equal by adding zeros at the end.
Step 2: Write down the numbers one below the other with the aligned decimal point
Step 3: Add the numbers as we add whole numbers normally and put the decimal point in the result at the corresponding place.
Methods of solving decimals subtraction:
Step 1: Check whether the decimal numbers which are to be added have the same number of digits in the decimal part. If not make them equal by adding zeros at the end.
Step 2: Write down the numbers one below the other with the aligned decimal points
Step 3: Subtract the numbers as we usually subtract whole numbers and put the decimal point in the result at the corresponding place.
Methods of solving decimals multiplication:
Step 1: Multiply the decimals as usual not including decimal point
Step 2: Count the total number of decimal places in the all given numbers
Step 3: Insert the decimal point according to the number of decimal places in the result
Methods of solving decimals division:
Step 1: convert the decimal dividend as well as divisor into whole number
Step 2: Perform normal division.
Solving decimals example problems:
1) Add 0.43 with 5.6
Solution:
Write 5.6 as 5.60
Add 0.43+5.60
0.43
5.60
--- -----
6.03
2)Subtract 7.89 from 9.20
Solution:
9.20
7.89 (-)
------
1.31
3) Multiply 1.4 by 2.1
Solution:
Multiply without decimal point 14 x 21
14 x 21 = 294
There is 1 decimal poit in both numbers 1.4 and 2.1. So write the answer in 2 decimal places
294 = 2.94
4) Divide 3.42 by 1.56
Solution:
Converting 3.42 and 1.56 into whole number
3.42 = `(3.42 *100)/100 ` = `342/100`
1.56 =` (1.56 *100)/100` = `156/100`
Divide `342/100` by `156/100`
`(342/100) / (156/100)`
=` 342/100` x `100/156`
=`34200/15600`
=2.192
`3.42/1.56 ` = 2.192
