Adding and Subtracting Fractions


A fraction can be altered to a decimal by dividing the upper number, or numerator, by the lower number, or denominator. Fractions are to indicate ratios, and to represent division which is one of the basic arithmetic operations. Thus the fraction 1/2 is also used to signify the ratio 1:2 (one is to two) and the division 1 ÷ 2 as well, (one divided by two).

Adding fractions:

Adding fraction - Same denominators just add the numerators. we can keep the same denominator.

(2/6) +(3/6)   =  (2+3) /6 = (5/6)
Adding fraction with different denominators, then take L.C.M of those two numbers as the denominator and multiply the numerator with a suitable number to give the L.C.M. value. And then add,
 (2/3) + (2/5) =(10/15) +(6/15 ) =(16 / 15)


Example problems (adding fractions):

Adding fraction example:

6/2 + 7/2

Answer:

The answer is.   13/2

Solution:

The denominators are the same so the denominator of the answer will be 2. Add the numerators for the answer. 6 + 7 = 13. The answer is6/2 + 7/2  =(6+7)/2 . This answer is reduced. we get   13/2  while adding

Check:

You can check the answer with your calculator. Determine 6 divided by 2, determine 7 divided by 8, and add the results. Now divide 13 by 2. Both answers should be the same. If you are correct, the answers are the similar (equivalent) and you have successfully added two fractions.

Subtracting fractions:

Subtracting fraction - Same denominators just subtract the numerators. we can keep the same denominator.

(6/5 ) -(2/3)   =(6-2) / 5 =(4/5)
Subtracting fraction with different denominators, then take L.C.M. of those two numbers as the denominator and multiply the numerator with a suitable number to give the L.C.M. value. And then subtract ,
(4/3) +(1/5 ) =(20/15 )+(3/15) =(17 /15)


Subtracting fraction example:

4/3  -  2/3

Answer:

The answer is.   2/3

Solution:

The denominators are the same so the denominator of the answer will be 3. subtract the numerators for the answer. 4 - 2 =  2. The answer is 4/3  -  2/3 =(4 - 2)/3 . This answer is already reduced. we get  2/3  while subtracting

Check:

You can check the answer with your calculator. Determine 4 divided by 3, determine 2 divided by 3, and subtract the results. Now divide 2 by 3. Both answers will be the same. If you are correct, the answers are the similar (equivalent) and you have successfully added two fractions.
