Hi Friends!! How much do you enjoy mathematics? It is one of my favorite subject and how about yours? I am here to help you, understand various mathematics topics. After which i am sure you will agree to my words saying mathematics is interesting.
Did you have Fill in the blanks in your question paper? I am sure each one of us come across this from our KG classes itself. Find the missing letter, find the appropriate term or word and so on. I am just trying to do the same today. Fun right? Sometimes its good to do something different. Here i have tried to find the missing term using proportion. Do you find it interesting? I have already posted about what is a proportion earlier. Check that out for more details.
Find the missing term:-
a) If the first, second and fourth terms of a proportion are 2, 5 and 10 respectively, find the 3rd term.
We do not know what the third term is so lets assume to be x
Then the two ratios are 2:5 and x:10
Therefore we write it as 2:5=x:10
We need to cross multiple it
= x*5=10*2 (Product of means=Product of extremes)
= x=10*2/5
= x=20/5
= 4
Therefore the value of x= 4
Thus, the 3rd term of the proportion is 4.
Easy right, Lets work on another simple ratio and find the missing term.
b) The 1st, 3rd and 4th terms of the proportion are 1, 4, and 12 respectively Find the 2nd term.
Use the same method followed in the early problem. (Assume the 2nd number as x)
1:x= 4:12
= x*4=1*12 (cross multiple it- product of means=product of extremes)
x= 1*12/4
therefore x= 3.
Thus the 2nd term of the proportion is 3.
This was the simple step by step procedure to find the value of x or the missing term using proportion. Will you be able to find the value of x or the missing number given to you? I am sure you will be. If you are able to do so let me know. If you are not and you want to learn more keep me informed on it as well and i will help you out with it.
